چکیده

In this study, Eucalyptus globulus stumpwood samples collected from six different sites in Portugal were evaluated for their ease of pulping, using two delignification processes (kraft and alkaline sulfite-anthraquinonemethanol (ASAM)). Morphologically, the stumpwood included fibers with a mean length of 0.930 mm, diameter of 21.4 μm, lumen width of 9.1 μm, and cell-wall thickness of 6.1 μm. The Runkel ratio varied between 1.0 and 1.9, and the slenderness ratio ranged between 50.6 and 35.1. ASAM pulps presented higher yields and kappa numbers (49.3% and 36, respectively) when compared to kraft pulps (42.7% and 14, respectively). Extractive-free material increased pulp yield (51.7% and 47.5% for ASAM and kraft, respectively) and decreased kappa number (18 and 11). The kraft pulps showed a coarseness of 0.096 mg/m, curl of 5.2%, and 16.7% kinked fibers, while for the ASAM pulps, these values were 0.105 mg/m, 5.2%, and 16.3%, respectively.

Integration of Kraft Pulping on a Forest Biorefinery by the Addition of a Steam Explosion Pretreatment

Steam explosion has been proposed for a wide range of lignocellulosic applications, including fractionation of biomass, pre-treatment of biomass for ethanol production, or as an alternative to conventional mechanical pulping. Nevertheless, a steam explosion process could also be used as pretreatment before chemical pulping, expecting a reduction in cooking time due to the open structure of the ...

Alkaline Pulping of Portuguese Eucalyptus globulus: Effect on Hexenuronic Acid Content

The effect of alkaline pulping parameters (temperature, effective alkali (EA) and sulphidity) on the hexenuronic acid (HexA) content of Portuguese Eucalyptus globulus pulps was studied. The HexA content was calculated on a pentosan basis. Unlike softwood pulping, the amount of this acid increased during kraft cooking and only started to decrease in the final stage of delignification (kappa numb...

Isolation and characterization of lignins from Eucalyptus grandis Hill ex Maiden and Eucalyptus globulus Labill. by enzymatic mild acidolysis (EMAL)

Despite the growing importance of Eucalyptus wood as raw material for pulp and paper, there is a lack of knowledge on the chemistry of their macromolecular components. The present paper addresses this issue by applying the recently developed protocol for isolating enzymatic mild acidolysis lignins (EMAL) from Eucalyptus grandis, Eucalyptus globulus and the softwood species Douglas fir and white...

Variation of Wood Pulping and Bleached Pulp Properties Along the Stem in Mature Eucalyptus globulus Trees

The wood of a mature (40-year-old) Eucalyptus globulus Labill tree was characterized at different stem height levels (0%, 10%, 35%, and 50% of total height) regarding pulping, bleaching, and paper properties. Pulp yields increased upwards from 46% to 50%, and Kappa number decreased from 17.5 to 12.3 at 0 and 50% height, respectively. The estimated specific wood consumption ranged from 3.2 m odt...

Comprehensive Kinetic Study of Delignification, Carbohydrate Degradation, Cellulose Chain Scissions, and Hexenuronic Acid Reactions during Kraft Pulping of Eucalyptus Globulus

Eucalyptus globulus represents one of the most suited fibre sources for the production of a wide range of high quality papers and high-purity dissolving pulps. The optimization of kraft pulping covering both continuous and batch processes demands kinetic models suitable for advanced control and offline optimization of the cooking operation. Quite recently, an improved kinetic model structure fo...
